Letters from Thelma and Edward Kendell to Sarah

My Aunt Margaret sent me these letters that Thelma and Edward Kendell sent as children to their big sister Sarah. She had this to say about them:

"During the school year of 1927, Grandma Kendell sent Sarah to live with Anna and Dr. Warren Allred who lived in Nephi. Sarah had just suffered with nephritis, and her mother was afraid she would suffer in the cold South Weber winters, so she sent her south. I think she also must have felt a little comfort in knowing Sarah was living with a doctor....

These are just two of the letters sent back and forth from South Weber and Nephi. The first letter (in two parts) is written by Thelma who was only seven. She calls herself Georgia. Sarah was going by “Elaine” at this time also. Look at how well she writes cursive for a 7- year old. She starts, “Dear Sister, I like Clinton all right. A witch came to Clinton yesterday. It made some of the kids balled.” (I’m guessing she means ball, like cry.) I think you can read the rest.

The second letter is one Emma wrote “for Edward.” I’m guessing she printed and made some of her letters backwards so that it would look like Edward might have written it."
