Margaret Martin in Menan, Idaho in 1910 census

In the 1910 census, Margaret Martin has taken her kids and moved away from John and Sarah Ann to Menan. I'm not sure when exactly this happened, or why. I guess life as a polygamist family in 1910 would have been pretty tough. This is 20 years after the Manifesto that ended the performance of plural marriages. It didn't dissolve any plural marriages that were already in effect. In fact, Margaret had a child in 1893, three years after the Manifesto. I imagine though, that the culture had changed quite a bit by 1910 and it may have just been easier to split up. Kind of sad. From what I've heard, John sold half his estate and bought her the enough land in Menan for her to split up among her kids and all live on.

One interesting thing is that Margaret is listed as a widow here, even though John is still alive. I wonder what the reason for that is. Did she feel widowed by the Manifesto? Was she angry at John, thinking "He is dead to me"? Had she just not seen him in so long that she assumed he was dead? Was she trying to protect him from a government intolerant of polygamy? Or did the enumerator just assume that a 55 year-old woman with grown children and no husband must be a widow?

Well, here is the document.
