Post Card from Sarah to Emma Kendell, 1934.

Aunt Margaret sent me this post card dated 1934. Josephine Kendell had died two years earlier, leaving Sarah, Emma, Thelma, and Edward orphans. Sarah was the oldest at 18 (20 at the time of this postcard). Edward was 11 at the time of his mother's death. Margaret says:
"This postcard was sent by Sarah to Emma while Emma was working in Layton. When the “kids” were out on their own—Emma, living away, working in people’s homes, Sarah, going to Utah State, Edward and Thelma holding down the fort or working where they could find work, they devised a plan for quick communication. They purchased a bunch of postcards and sent news back and forth that way. They could jot down a few quick facts, and drop a card in the mailbox, and it wouldn’t be as much time or pressure as writing a letter would be."

I've always been impressed at how they were able to hold things together after their mom died.
